Dear Reader,
Left fascinated yet lacking closure following the ending of Ariel Dorfman’s 1990 play Death and the Maiden, the three of us wanted to create something to answer our lingering questions. We recognized that a play only allows its audience to see characters’ conversations and outward emotions, not their entire internal dialogue. To provide greater perspective on the inner workings of Paulina, Gerardo, and Roberto, we collaborated to produce three epilogues, one for each character: a conversation between Paulina and her therapist, the introduction from Gerardo’s self-aggrandizing memoir, and excerpts of Roberto’s journal during the play’s events. Whether or not you agree with our interpretations, we hope you find our depictions of the characters’ viewpoints thought-provoking.
